Nurse Helps Lung Cancer Patients Navigate Care

March 24 @ 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm

|Recurring Event (See all)
The Upstate South Carolina Liveung Lung Cancer Group meets on the third Tuesday of every month.

The Upstate LiveLung Lung Cancer Group will meet at 6 pm, Tuesday, February 24, 2015 at St. Francis Cancer Center, 104 Innovation Drive, Greenville, in the Education Room. The meeting is free and open to everyone touched by lung cancer, including patients, survivors and those who care about them. Refreshments will be served.

When patients receive a cancer diagnosis, they face a maze of doctor appointments, imaging tests, surgery, radiation, chemotherapy or other treatments. Oncology nurse navigators guide patients through all stages of cancer care—from screening and diagnosis to treatment and survivorship. February’s LiveLung speaker, Amy Fuller, RN, BSN, is an oncology nurse navigator who will discuss the role of navigating lung cancer patients.

Amy
As a child, Ms. Fuller watched her grandfather battle cancer, which helped inspire her to pursue a nursing career. She earned a BS in Nursing at USC Upstate. Her first nursing position was at Bon Secours St. Francis Downtown. She later accepted a position on the acute inpatient unit at Greenville Memorial Hospital where she worked with cancer patients. She earned her chemotherapy certification and eventually became the clinical coordinator for the inpatient unit during her four years at that medical facility. In 2010, Ms. Fuller returned to Bon Secours St. Francis Downtown where she developed a passion for lung cancer patients, survivors and their families. Ms. Fuller helped develop the free Lung Cancer Screening program at Bon Secours St. Francis. Ms. Fuller and management at St. Francis also recognized the need for a support group for patients, survivors, and those touched by lung cancer. Ms. Fuller is co-leader of the support group, along with lung cancer survivor Dan Powell.

Greenville LiveLung meetings are held on the third Tuesday of each month. Note: Greenville LiveLung meetings are usually held on the third Tuesday of each month. February’s meeting is on the fourth Tuesday due to earlier inclement weather. The meetings are a program of the Dusty Joy Foundation, a 501(c)(3) charitable organization with a mission of advancing lung cancer education, early detection and compassion for those impacted by lung cancer. Bon Secours St. Francis supports the Greenville area LiveLung Lung Cancer Support group as a service to their patients, their families and friends, as well as to the community they serve.
